UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture is offering 13 online classes this fall
AMHERST, Mass. — The UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture is offering an online class on raising dairy goats sustainably again this fall. STOCKSCH 184 is a 3 credit, college class taught by Stockbridge instructor, Deboaah Niemann-Boehle, who lives in central Illinois and has experience both as a college teacher and a farmer. Deborah is the author of the text for this class, Raising Goats Naturally: A Complete Guide to Milk, Meat, and More. This online course will cover the principals and practices of raising dairy goats sustainably for both the professional small farmer and serious homesteader.
STOCKSCH 184 – Raising Dairy Goats Sustainably explores the differences between conventional, organic, and sustainable methods of raising goats and managing a dairy. It covers planning and managing the dairy, as well as natural methods of raising goats. This class will integrate current research on goat health issues with best management practices and practical experience. Breeding and birthing issues will be discussed, as well as raising kids. The basics of cheese and soap making will be included, as well as composting waste and using milk or whey as fertilizer or to raise other meat animals, such as poultry, pigs, and calves.
This college level class maybe used to satisfy the degree requirements for the UMass Sustainable Food and Farming 15-credit Certificate, the 60-credit Associate of Science and/or the 120-credit Bachelor of Science degree programs. Credits may also be transferred to other colleges or universities. The UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture Sustainable Food and Farming program is the only online program in the U.S. that offers 40 online classes that may be taken either individually or toward completion of a fully online degree.
The UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture is offering 13 online classes during the fall semester including; Practical Beekeeping, Integrated Pest Management, Organic Vegetable Production and more. Online classes this fall will begin early due to COVID adjustments to the campus schedule. Classes will begin on August 24, 2020 and end before Thanksgiving. Registration is now open and all online classes (except for graduate level classes) cost $482 per credit.
