2014 Massachusetts Agriculture Day

On Wednesday, March 26th, agriculture will once again take center stage at the State House in Boston. Massachusetts Agriculture Day is the one day a year where farmers come together to focus legislative attention on our industry.  On the one hand, it’s a celebration that recognizes the hard work and many diverse products produced across the Commonwealth; but it’s also an important opportunity for us to have our voices heard and make our issues known to the legislative body.  We strongly encourage each of you to reach out to your local representatives and let them know what matters to you.  What challenges does your business face? What opportunities are on the horizon? How can they be of help?

Our industry generates almost $490 million dollars of revenue per year, and is responsible for maintaining almost 520,000 acres of open space.  More importantly, the number of farms in Massachusetts continues to grow as the “buy local” movement continues to build momentum.  Issues affecting farmers demand attention.  The challenges and opportunities we face do not affect us alone, but our customers and communities as well.

The schedule of events for the day is:

9:30 – 11:30am                  Registration, Bartlett Hall

10:00am                               Farmer Orientation on Agricultural Issues, Nurses Hall

10:00 – 11:00am                Farmer/Legislator Visits

11:00am                               Preview Reception for Legislators (invitation only)

11:15 – 12:15pm               Speaking Program, Nurses hall

12:00pm                               Taste of Massachusetts Reception & Exhibits, Great Hall & Grand Staircase Area

How can you become involved?  Please try to join us on Ag Day to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to educate and inform our lawmakers about agriculture.  There are many volunteer opportunities where we could use your help. Keep in mind that this is an event run by agricultural volunteers, and that many hands make light work. If you’d like to make a monetary donation, donate produce, meat or an agricultural product, or volunteer your time to assist with set up, break down, registration, or delivery of souvenir mugs to the legislators, please contact our office at 508-481-4766, or by email: agpromoboard@mfbf.net.  We look forward to seeing you there!
